Built on the grounds of a Revolution-era iron forge, this par-63 executive course fulfills an important desire of its former owner to develop the land into a public recreation center.
Liberty Forge Golf Course
The story of Liberty Forge Golf Course began in the time of George Washington, as a farm owned by an “iron master.” The abundant hardwoods and the farm’s draught horses made this land an ideal location for forging iron. Over the interceding years, the land changed hands many times, eventually purchased by the late John G. Williams in 1985. Mr. Williams envisioned a public recreation center for the community, plans which included a golf course.
Years later, in May 2003, Liberty Forge Golf Course opened to the public. Primarily designed and constructed by Alby Gerst, this 18-hole executive-length golf course measures just 3,633 yards yet packs all the punch you’d expect from a full-length track. Its 18 holes are divided up evenly between par-4s and par-3s, and feature all bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens. Water comes into play on nine holes, complete with a fairway island landing zone on No. 18.
In addition to the course, Liberty Forge also offers a full practice facility, complete with a 34-stall driving range plus an additional natural grass tee area, putting green, and practice bunker. There’s also a family-friendly option for the kids: an 18-hole miniature golf course.
Liberty Forge Golf Course represents the fulfillment of Mr. Williams’ dream of providing a sustainable and environmentally conscious community recreation facility to be enjoyed by generations to come.
